What Is eSIM and How Does It Work? A Simple Guide to Digital SIM Cards

Quick answer

An eSIM is a digital SIM built into your phone. Instead of inserting a plastic card, your carrier sends your SIM profile over the internet, and your phone stores it on a secure chip. It works just like a physical SIM for calls, texts, and data. US models of the iPhone 14 and later use eSIM only.

If you’ve bought a new phone recently, you may have noticed something missing: the little SIM card tray. That’s because more and more phones now use an eSIM, a digital version of the SIM card that lives inside your phone.

For years, getting a phone connected meant finding a paper clip, popping out a tiny tray, and swapping a plastic card. With an eSIM, you can activate service, switch phones, or add a second number in a few taps.

At Victra, the largest Verizon Authorized Retailer with nearly 1,500 locations across the United States, we help customers set up eSIMs every day. This guide explains what an eSIM is, how it works, which phones use it, and how to activate, transfer, and protect your eSIM on Verizon.

Key Takeaways

  • An eSIM is a digital SIM. Apple calls it “an industry-standard digital SIM built into your iPhone, eliminating the need for a physical SIM card.”
  • It works the same as a SIM card. Calls, texts, data, signal, and speed are the same.
  • Many new phones are eSIM only in the US, including iPhone 14 and later and the Google Pixel 10 series. iPhone Air is eSIM only worldwide.
  • Verizon makes it easy. You can switch to eSIM or move your number to a new phone in the My Verizon app, with no fee.
  • Moving to a new phone is simpler than ever. You can transfer an eSIM from iPhone to iPhone, from Galaxy to Galaxy, and even between Android and iPhone.
  • Protect your account. An eSIM can’t be pulled out of a stolen phone, but scammers can still target your account, so turn on Verizon’s SIM Protection and Number Lock.

What Is eSIM?

An eSIM, short for embedded SIM, is a SIM that’s built into your phone instead of being a removable card. It does the same job as a traditional SIM card, but your carrier delivers it digitally.

What a SIM Card Does

SIM stands for Subscriber Identity Module. Whether it’s a plastic card or an eSIM, the SIM:

Connects

Your phone to the network

It links your phone to your carrier’s cellular network.

Identifies

Your account and number

It tells the network which account and phone number belong to your phone.

Enables

Calls, texts, and data

Without an active SIM or eSIM, your phone can’t connect to a cellular network.

What “Embedded” Means

The GSMA, the global mobile industry group that created the eSIM standard, explains that the SIM can now be “securely downloaded into a ‘Secure Element’ that can be permanently embedded inside any type of device.” In other words, the secure chip is already inside your phone. Your carrier simply loads your SIM information onto it.

How Does eSIM Work?

How an eSIM works A diagram in four steps. Your carrier creates a digital SIM profile. The profile downloads to your phone over the internet. Your phone stores it on a secure chip. Your phone then connects to the cellular network for calls, texts, and data. 1. Carrier Creates your profile 2. Download Over Wi-Fi or data 3. Secure chip Stores it safely 4. Connect Calls, texts, data
Your phone downloads your SIM profile, stores it on a built-in secure chip, and uses it to connect, just like a physical SIM.
  1. Your phone has a secure chip built inThis tiny chip is designed to store SIM information safely.
  2. Your carrier creates a digital SIM profileThe profile is tied to your phone number and account.
  3. Your phone downloads the profileOver Wi-Fi or another connection, using an app, a QR code, a link, or a prompt during setup.
  4. Your phone connects to the networkIt uses that profile just as it would a physical SIM card.

Your phone can store several eSIM profiles. Apple says an iPhone can “manage up to eight or more eSIMs,” and you can switch between them in your settings.

eSIM vs. Physical SIM: What’s the Difference?

Both connect your phone to a cellular network. The difference is how you get and manage them.

A common question is whether an eSIM affects your signal. It doesn’t. Your signal depends on your carrier’s network, your location, and your phone, not on the type of SIM you use. Learn more about what affects cell phone signal strength.

Which Phones Use eSIM?

Most new smartphones, tablets, and smartwatches support eSIM. In the US, many popular phones now use eSIM only.

eSIM-Only Phones in the US

According to Apple and Google, these models don’t use a physical SIM in the US:

iPhone (US models)

iPhone 14 and later

iPhone 14, iPhone 15, iPhone 16, and iPhone 16e models, iPhone 17, iPhone 17e, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, iPhone 18 Pro, and iPhone 18 Pro Max.

Worldwide

iPhone Air

eSIM only in every country where it’s sold.

Google Pixel (US models)

Pixel 10 series

Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, and Pixel 10 Pro XL.

iPad (Wi-Fi + Cellular)

Recent iPad models

iPad Pro (M4, M5), iPad Air (M2, M3, M4), iPad (A16), and iPad mini (A17 Pro).

Many other phones, including Samsung Galaxy models, support both a physical SIM and an eSIM. Shopping for a new phone? Explore the iPhone 17 series, the iPhone 18 Pro, or the Google Pixel 10.

How to Check If Your Phone Has eSIM

Verizon recommends checking your phone’s settings under About or About Phone. On iPhone, eSIM is supported on iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, and later. If you’re not sure, the My Verizon app can also check your phone’s eSIM compatibility when you activate.

How to Activate an eSIM on Verizon

The easiest way to set up an eSIM on Verizon is the My Verizon app. According to Verizon, using the app means:

  • You won’t need your phone’s IMEI number or SIM ICCID number
  • You don’t need to scan a QR code
  • Your service is activated over Wi-Fi
  • There’s no wait for a SIM card in the mail

Verizon also says there is no charge to move your line using the My Verizon app.

Switching From a Physical SIM to eSIM

If your phone supports eSIM and you’re using a physical SIM today, you can switch in a few steps:

  1. Open My VerizonSign in to the My Verizon app.
  2. Go to MobileOpen the Mobile tab.
  3. Select Get SIMScroll down and tap Get SIM.
  4. Follow the promptsYour eSIM downloads and activates over Wi-Fi.

Who can use the app: To make eSIM changes in My Verizon, you need a standard monthly Verizon plan, an eSIM-compatible phone that’s unlocked, and Account Owner or Account Manager access.

Bringing Your Own Phone to Verizon

If you’re switching to Verizon with a phone you already own, you can activate it on eSIM in the My Verizon app. You’ll confirm your phone model, enter a one-time code sent to you by text, review your order, and tap Confirm and activate. On Android and Pixel phones, tap Add to turn on the eSIM when the download finishes.

Learn more about the Verizon Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program, see how to switch to Verizon, or read our guide to activating your new phone with Verizon.

Verizon Prepaid

Verizon Prepaid customers can activate an eSIM in three steps: download the My Verizon app, choose a plan, and activate. Keep in mind that Verizon says “you can only activate eSIM on your device while you are in the U.S.,” and the app uses your location to confirm it.

How to Transfer an eSIM to a New Phone

Moving your eSIM to a new phone used to require a call to your carrier. Today, you can usually do it yourself. When the eSIM activates on your new phone, service on your old phone turns off. Before you switch, it’s a good idea to back up your iPhone or Android phone.

iPhone to iPhone

eSIM Quick Transfer

Both iPhones need iOS 18.4 or later, the same Apple Account, and Bluetooth on, with your old iPhone unlocked. Follow the setup prompts, or go to Settings > Cellular > Set Up Cellular (or Add eSIM). With iOS 26 or later, you can transfer more than one number.

Android to iPhone, and back

Cross-platform transfer

Needs an iPhone 11 or later on iOS 26 or later and a compatible phone on Android 16 or later, with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on. Verizon is a supported US carrier. On iPhone: Settings > Set Up Cellular > Transfer from Android, then scan the QR code with your Android camera.

Samsung Galaxy to Galaxy

SIM manager

On your new Galaxy: Settings > Connections > SIM manager > Add eSIM, then select Transfer SIM from another Galaxy/Android phone. Options may vary by carrier.

Any phone

My Verizon app

Connect your new phone to Wi-Fi, download My Verizon, sign in, and follow the prompts. Already signed in? Go to Mobile, select your line, and choose Change or replace device on this line or Activate or get SIM.

If you have only one line on your account, Verizon says you’ll need your old phone to confirm the transfer. If you have multiple lines, another phone on the account can be used instead. These guides help you bring everything else along: how to transfer data from Android to iPhone and tips for switching from iPhone to Android.

From the Victra store floor: Guests who buy a new iPhone are often surprised to find there’s no SIM tray at all. The good news is that moving an eSIM usually takes just a few minutes. One tip: if you’ve turned on Verizon’s SIM Protection, turn it off before you switch phones, or the transfer will be blocked.

Two Numbers on One Phone: Dual SIM With eSIM

eSIM makes it easy to keep two phone numbers on one phone, such as a work line and a personal line.

According to Verizon:

  • Dual SIM phones can have two numbers from the same carrier or from two different carriers.
  • Some new smartphones can store up to 8 eSIMs.
  • If you’re on a call on one number, calls to your other number go to voicemail. You’ll see a missed call notification when you hang up.
  • If you have two Verizon numbers on your phone, you can add TravelPass to both.
  • Dual SIM phones bought from Verizon have a 60-day SIM lock to prevent fraud, so you’ll need to wait 60 days before adding another carrier’s service on the second line.

Using eSIM When You Travel Internationally

eSIM is especially handy for travel. You can keep your Verizon number on one line and add a local or travel data plan on another, without hunting for a SIM card at the airport.

Option 1

Use your Verizon plan abroad

Verizon’s international options, like TravelPass, keep your number and plan working while you travel. See the Verizon international plan for details.

Option 2

Add a travel eSIM

Many travel eSIM providers sell short-term data plans for other countries. Your phone must be unlocked to use another carrier’s eSIM.

Check your unlock status before you buy a travel eSIM

Verizon’s current postpaid policy says phones bought from Verizon are unlocked automatically “when purchased at full retail price or if the device financing agreement balance is paid in full.” If you’re still paying off your phone, it may be locked to Verizon, and a travel eSIM from another provider won’t work. In that case, use Verizon’s international options instead.

For Verizon Prepaid, a new unlocking policy took effect on January 27, 2026. Phones activated on or before January 26, 2026, still unlock automatically after 60 days of paid service. If you have a Samsung phone, our guide to unlocking your Samsung phone explains more.

Victra Tech Tip: Install your travel eSIM before you leave, while you’re on reliable Wi-Fi, then turn it on when you arrive. For more travel advice, read our data roaming guide, learn what Wi-Fi Calling is, and pack with our list of travel tech essentials.

Is eSIM Safe?

Yes, eSIM is a secure technology. The GSMA says it “offers an equivalent level of security and protection to that provided by the removable SIM card.” However, eSIM doesn’t protect you from every scam. In a SIM swap, a criminal pretends to be you and tries to get your carrier to move your number to their phone. PIRG notes that SIM swapping “targets physical SIM cards or eSIM cards.” Because the attack targets your account, not the card, it’s smart to add extra protection.

How eSIM helps

Built-in protection

  • A thief can’t pull an eSIM out of your phone and put it in another device
  • It can’t be lost or damaged like a tiny plastic card
  • It can be turned off remotely if your phone is lost or stolen (AT&T)
What you should still do

Lock down your account

  • Turn on SIM Protection to block SIM swaps, upgrades, and BYOD activations
  • Turn on Number Lock to stop unauthorized transfers to another carrier
  • Never share account PINs or one-time codes with anyone who contacts you unexpectedly

You can turn on SIM Protection and Number Lock in the My Verizon app or on the My Verizon website. Turn SIM Protection off temporarily when you’re ready to switch phones. Numbers with Number Lock on can’t generate a Number Transfer PIN. The FCC has also adopted rules that require wireless carriers to use stronger customer authentication and to notify customers about SIM change and port-out requests. Where eSIM Is Headed

eSIM is growing fast. According to GSMA Intelligence, about 5% of smartphone connections worldwide used eSIM at the end of 2025, and that share is expected to reach 10% by the end of 2026. By 2030, the GSMA expects eSIM smartphone connections to outnumber those on traditional removable SIM cards.

Awareness is growing too. The GSMA reports that consumer awareness of eSIM climbed from 25% to 60%, and that 73% of mobile network operators have launched commercial eSIM for smartphones. With more phones dropping the SIM tray every year, eSIM is quickly becoming the new normal.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an eSIM in simple terms?

An eSIM is a digital SIM built into your phone. Instead of inserting a plastic SIM card, your carrier sends your SIM information over the internet, and your phone stores it on a secure chip. It lets you make calls, send texts, and use data just like a physical SIM.

Is eSIM better than a physical SIM?

Both do the same job, but eSIM is more convenient for most people. You can activate service digitally, store more than one number, add a travel plan easily, and you’ll never lose a tiny card. The main downside is that you can’t simply move a card to a spare phone if yours breaks.

Does eSIM affect signal or speed?

No. Your signal and speed depend on your carrier’s network, your location, and your phone. An eSIM connects to the network the same way a physical SIM does, so you get the same coverage, 5G access, and data speeds.

How do I switch from a physical SIM to eSIM on Verizon?

Open the My Verizon app, go to the Mobile tab, select Get SIM, and follow the prompts. You’ll need a standard monthly plan, an unlocked eSIM-compatible phone, and Account Owner or Account Manager access. Verizon says there’s no fee to make the change in the app.

How do I transfer my eSIM to a new phone?

On iPhone, use eSIM Quick Transfer during setup (iOS 18.4 or later on both phones). On Samsung Galaxy, go to Settings > Connections > SIM manager > Add eSIM. To move between Android and iPhone, you’ll need iOS 26 and Android 16. You can also use the My Verizon app on any phone.

Can I switch back to a physical SIM?

Only if your phone has a SIM tray. US models of iPhone 14 and later and the Pixel 10 series don’t have one, so they use eSIM only. Many other phones, including Samsung Galaxy models, support both, and you can switch between them with your carrier’s help.

Can I have two phone numbers with eSIM?

Yes. Many phones support Dual SIM, so you can keep two numbers, such as work and personal, on one phone. Some phones can store up to 8 eSIMs. On Verizon, calls to one number go to voicemail while you’re on a call on the other.

Can I use an eSIM when I travel abroad?

Yes. You can keep your Verizon number active with Verizon’s international options, like TravelPass, or add a travel eSIM for local data. To use another provider’s travel eSIM, your phone must be unlocked. Install it before your trip, and turn it on when you arrive.

Is eSIM safe? Can an eSIM be hacked?

eSIM is secure, and it can’t be physically removed from a stolen phone. However, scammers can still try a SIM swap by impersonating you to your carrier. To protect your account, turn on Verizon’s SIM Protection and Number Lock, and never share your PINs or one-time codes.

What happens to my eSIM if my phone breaks or is lost?

Your eSIM stays on the old phone, but your number stays with your Verizon account. Open the My Verizon app on your replacement phone, go to the Mobile tab, select the device, and choose Activate or get SIM. You can also visit a Victra store for help.

Do I need Wi-Fi to set up an eSIM?

Usually, yes. Most eSIM setups need Wi-Fi or another internet connection to download your profile. Verizon’s My Verizon app activates your service over Wi-Fi. Apple notes that in some countries and regions, eSIM-only iPhone models can activate without a Wi-Fi network.

Do smartwatches and tablets use eSIM?

Yes. Cellular smartwatches, like Apple Watch and Galaxy Watch models, use eSIM to connect without your phone nearby. Many tablets do too, and recent iPad Wi-Fi + Cellular models are eSIM only. Some laptops also support eSIM, though it varies by model.

The Bottom Line

An eSIM is simply a digital SIM card built into your phone. It connects you to your carrier just like a physical SIM, with the same calls, texts, signal, and speed, but without a tiny card to insert or lose.

With eSIM-only iPhones and Pixels now standard in the US, it’s worth knowing how to activate, transfer, and protect your eSIM. Use the My Verizon app for quick changes, turn on SIM Protection and Number Lock, and check your unlock status before you travel.
