Is a glass screen protector really worth it?

It’s no secret that people will argue about anything on the internet, but even taking that as a given, there’s a surprising amount of debate surrounding the efficiency of cell phone screen protectors. Some folks dismiss screen protectors as a waste of time and money. Others insist that if you don’t use a glass phone screen protector you don’t deserve to use a phone at all. This being online discourse, arguments for and against screen protector use often get heated.
So do you need a screen protector or not? At the risk of offending the anti-screen protector camp, we’d argue that you do, with a couple of important caveats: No screen protector makes your phone invulnerable, and their efficiency depends heavily on the type of material you use.
Benefits of Glass Screen Protectors
Screen protectors are typically made of three different materials: plastic, glass, and liquid glass. Of the three, plastic protectors are the cheapest, but offer the least protection. Glass phone screen protectors are much hardier than plastic. Look for tempered glass screen protectors with an anti-scratch rating of 9H. Screen protectors with this rating may still scratch, but will shield your phone’s screen from damage.
A glass phone screen protector has other advantages. While plastic screen protectors can feel “rubbery” to the touch, glass protectors feel just the same as your phone screen. Some glass phone screen protectors come with anti-fingerprint protection, preventing unsightly smudges from obscuring your screen.
Scratch & Crack Protection
The threat of scratches and cracks may have you wondering “should I use a screen protector.” After all, your phone goes through a lot in a day. It gets shoved in pockets or purses, where its screen can come into contact with keys, coins, and other hard or sharp objects. And while modern phone screens are much tougher than they used to be, few can survive a fall onto concrete undamaged.
Again, glass screen protectors beat plastic if you want to keep your phone from breaking. The screen protector itself might break if you drop your phone, but there’s a better chance your actual screen won’t be damaged (and replacing a broken cell phone screen protector is much cheaper than replacing your phone screen).
None of this means your screen won’t be damaged by accidents, only that the risk of damage is lower with screen protectors. Think of it like using your seatbelt when driving. You could still be hurt in a crash, but the risk of serious or fatal injuries is lower.
Liquid Glass vs. Plastic Screen Protector
You’ve got one more option for keeping your phone safe: A Verizon screen protector made from liquid glass. Liquid glass is a spray solution containing a silicon dioxide nano-liquid. The liquid is rubbed onto the device screen, where it fills all the microscopic holes and imperfections on the screen, curing the glass to make it stronger and more scratch-resistant.
Compared to spray-on plastic screen projectors, a liquid glass screen protector is much more resilient, matching or even exceeding the strength of tempered glass.
So Is a Glass Screen Protector Really Worth It?
As far as we’re concerned, yes, you do need a screen protector if you’re serious about protecting your phone. Remember, however, that a Verizon screen protector is only one way to prevent phone damage. An impact-resistant case reduces the risk of damage if you drop your phone or accidentally crush it against something solid. And even with a liquid glass screen protector and tough case, it’s still wise to insure your phone with a comprehensive mobile protection plan
