Call For Kindness
December 8, 2021
It sometimes feels like there isn’t much kindness left in the world. Turn on the news and you’re inundated with stories about anger and division. Log into social media and you find people insulting and belittling each other. It can all get rather depressing if you let it, and masks an important truth: kindness remains an influential and powerful force. Kindness can change the world, one small act at a time.
Recognizing the need for kindness, Verizon launched its A Call for Kindness campaign in fall of 2020. The goal is simple. Along with Victra and other partners, Verizon is challenging brands, customers, and employees to be kind, to treat each other with care and respect, and to share stories of kindness.
How we’re activating A Call for Kindness
Verizon is taking a multifaceted approach to A Call for Kindness. The company has partnered with Kindness.org to provide thought leadership for the campaign, as well as make public scientific research into the impact kindness has on people’s daily lives. Kindness.org also provides examples of kindness people can use to quickly get involved in the social initiative.
Working with artists in ten different cities, Verizon is sponsoring the creation of kindness murals, each of which contains QR codes directing viewers to video messages. Once complete, murals will be distributed as #Call for Kindness postcards for local hospitals and social media “kind cards” you can share with others to show you appreciate them.
Verizon began A Call for Kindness by surveying thousands of people across all fifty states, asking them to share the acts of kindness they do and kind acts others do for them. The company is challenging everyone to make a kindness pledge to help make the world a better place.
Ideas for how you can help spread kindness
How can you help spread kindness? There are so many ways. Kindness doesn’t have to be a huge gesture with earthshaking results. True kindness is often expressed in small, meaningful ways, such as:
- Calling a family member to tell them they’re loved and appreciated.
- Thanking a coworker whose work is going unnoticed.
- Calling a friend to let them know you’re thinking of them.
- Paying it forward to a stranger.
- Fostering a kitten or puppy for your local animal shelter.
- Thanking a service worker for their hard work.
- Spending time with seniors.
- Helping someone across the road.
As Kindness.org points out, kindness is contagious, so you have no idea how far the ripples from your act of kindness will spread. It’s one reason why Verizon offers free programs like Verizon Up: because free offers and discounts make people happy, and happy people are more likely to be kind – to themselves and to others.
